May Is National Water Safety Month!

April 28, 2011 French Lick, Indiana – In recognition of the popularity of swimming and other recreational activities in the U.S., the month of May is National Water Safety Month!  Many organizations and agencies including the World Waterpark Association, The American Red Cross, and The National Recreation & Park Association are involved in bringing safe, enjoyable aquatic activities to the American public.

According to the US Army Corps of Engineers each year approximately 6,000 people drown in the U.S.   Drowning is the second leading cause of death in children 12 and younger.  Unfortunately most people drown within 10 to 30 feet of safety.

Big Splash Adventure urges everyone to educate themselves and our children to become “water aware”.  Teach children water safety and swimming skills as early as possible and learn how to perform life saving CPR.  Take advantage of local programs that offer swim lessons and CPR certifications. 

In an effort to educate, we would also like to pass on a few of our top water safety tips.  For instance, read and obey all posted safety rules.  Maintain constant visual contact with children in the water.  If a child is missing, check the water first, seconds count in preventing death or disability.  Also, don’t rely on swim lessons, life preservers, or other equipment to make a child “water safe”.  And finally, don’t use flotation devices as a substitute for supervision.  Never allow a young child to swim without an adult.

Big Splash Adventure will be offering free educational materials to our guests during the month of May and will be posting water safety tips throughout the month.   Use May as a month to educate your family in anticipation of the upcoming swim season.  Don’t let you or a loved one become a statistic.  Take time to access all of the wonderful programs about water safety on the internet and sign up now for local swim lessons and CPR training.
